Capture One has released version 22 of their raw photo editing software. This is a paid upgrade for purchasers of version 21 or older and a free upgrade for monthly subscribers.

This release adds two long awaited features HDR and panoramic image stitching , a new wireless tethering mode, auto image leveling, plus the usual round of usability improvements. HDR is a technique where multiple exposures are blended together to form a single composite image containing a wider dynamic range than what a camera is capable of capturing.

Two options are offered when merging images — Auto Adjust and Auto Align. Confusingly, this Auto Adjust checkbox is unrelated to the Auto Adjust options in the toolbar menu which also controls the Auto Adjust checkbox in the Import window. Auto Align automatically repositions images as needed to ensure they correctly overlap when stacked.

De-ghosting is a common option in HDR software to help smooth and blend areas that shift or move between exposures. For example, water, clouds, trees, cars, people, etc.

For me and the type of photography I do landscape , the problems are too severe. Another long awaited feature in Capture One 22 is panoramic image stitching. This process stitches together a sequence of overlapping images captured horizontally or vertically to create a new, RAW DNG panoramic image.

Single and multi-row sequences are supported. Simply shift-click on all applicable images, select Stitch to panorama , then choose a perspective that compliments your subject best Spherical , Cylindrical , Perspective , Panini. Which perspective you select will depend on subject, focal length, field of view, and which simply looks best. Capture One 22 caches previews for each perspective, so you may preview all four options together at once. Plus, smaller DNGs take up less hard drive space and are less processor intensive to edit.

How long it takes Capture One 22 to create a panoramic DNG depends on the number of images selected, the megapixel count of each image, and the speed of your computer. In general, panoramic image stitching works as expected, but similar to my experience with HDR, there are a couple of notable issues. With panoramic images, there is almost always some negative space to crop.

Unfortunately, Capture One does not provide an option to automatically crop the resultant panoramic DNG file. You have to zoom in and scroll up and down, left and right, and make micro adjustments to the cropping bounding box to retain all available pixels.

Similar to HDR, panoramic image stitching also suffers from substandard blending. Overlapping areas can turn out smudgy, jittery, and display repeating patterns. These defects are most pronounced in image sequences containing motion, but they can also appear when a subject is perfectly still. Wireless tethering works just like normal camera tethering in Capture One, except everything can now work over WiFi instead of running a long cable between a computer and a camera.

This new feature at launch only supports select camera bodies made by Phase One and Canon, but Capture One claims support for more cameras that have WiFi connectivity will be added in the forthcoming weeks and months.

I could then see a live preview of what my camera was seeing, make adjustments to exposure and a variety of other settings, and click the shutter button in Capture One to wirelessly capture an image. For me, wireless tethering worked just as well as wired, with the only compromise being the time it took for 45 megapixel RAW images to appear in Capture One after pressing the shutter.

On my network, this typically took between 5 and 10 seconds, which is a little slower than wired, but the convenience of moving and positioning the camera without tripping over wires was well worth the extra time.

This tool automatically rotates, levels and crops images. Capture One also added Rotation as a selectable option to the Auto Adjust toolbar menu. Tip: To automatically rotate and level images on import, enable Rotation in the Auto Adjust toolbar menu, then check the Auto Adjust checkbox in the Import Images window. Does it work? This appears to happen most often with images lacking a clear horizon line or geometric point of reference.

But for the most part, it does the job, and is a worthwhile addition to Capture One. Besides the issues with HDR de-ghosting or lack thereof and the strange blending defects of panoramic image stitching, Capture One 22 could very much use a processing queue for batch blending and stitching. Right now the process is singular, so you have to wait for one HDR or panoramic stitch process to complete before another may be started.

This can be especially laborious with HDR when you have many sequences to process. Overall, Capture One 22 is a better, more substantive upgrade than version 21 was a year ago. My hope is that Capture One can sort these issues out in the forthcoming weeks and months and not wait for the next paid upgrade a year from now.

I was very much looking forward to using HDR and panoramic stitching and not process those images using a different app , but this initial version of Capture One 22 feels a bit rushed and incomplete. I will update this review in the future if and when Capture One makes improvements.

Watch the video version of this review from my YouTube channel. I encountered a problem with HDR during Beta testing that you did not mention.

Notice that I said almost. For example, panel three had very heavy chroma, panel four had no visible chroma, and panel five showed heavy chroma. However my image sets were taken on a very calm day. Sadly, the time saved would be negated by the extra time and hassle of having to manually choose and blend anywhere from 35 to 90 HDR setups per house. I have been using Capture One for a few years and overall I have been satisfied.

I am a Nikon user and I knew that Panorama Stitch would be the only part of this upgrade that I would use.

I guessed I fell for the pre-update discount. Hopefully, Capture 22 will get corrected in future updates. So the result is disappointing. I find it pretty amazing to make this unfinished upgrade a monetized one. Maybe C1 should consider selling early-adopter-segments with a reasonable pricing and give the wider audience a bigger package later down the road. Your analysis on the HDR and panorama features is spot on, I have stopped using HDR soon after the first trials, because they are unusable.

Panoramas are hit and miss even with good shot planning and execution. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. December 9, Written by Todd Dominey. Simple things like renaming files or switching from grid to single image view are different in Capture One and they all take some getting used to.

Capture One Pro is feature-rich with just about everything a photographer needs in an editing app. As far as photo editors go, there are a couple of places where Capture One just rocks it. Here are a few of the other advantages of using Capture One Pro over Lightroom, or most of the other image editing softwares out there:.

Each brand has their own special recipe for rendering RAW files, but Capture One has long been known for being exceptional. Take a quick look at the video below to see how the photographer uses Capture One Pro to edit high-end fashion portraits. As far as the level and selection of standard adjustment tools are concerned — exposure, contrast, shadows, highlights, white balance, and so on — Capture One is up there with the best.

Some things are done differently, however. To edit straight-up saturation you need to go to another tab. Capture One Pro comes with an excellent Keystone adjustment. Pro only, not Express. There are plenty of useful autocorrect options for just about every tool, and these work better than my version of Lightroom. The auto levels adjustment seems particularly spot on. The Express version is obviously a bit more limited. Capture One has these too. When you use layers in Capture One Pro , you can make targeted adjustments to your photos and still use the majority of the image editing tools available, not just the ones in a given tool.

This is a huge benefit for those who like a fine level of control over photo manipulation. For mask creation you can paint them in manually, create a linear gradient mask, or a radial gradient mask similar to Luminar, actually. It also offers a feathering tool and edge refinements. The Luma Range feature in Capture One Pro is a particularly useful way of selecting areas of an image. Everything from Levels to Color Balance tools work in layers, and you can adjust the opacity of each edit layer — something that can only be done by way of a third party plugin in Lightroom see these Lightroom Tips for more info.

This latest version of Capture One Pro 12 now has luminosity masks. From there you can adjust the affected color range, hue, saturation and lightness. The 3-Way option even lets you adjust the color tint separately in the shadow, midtone and highlight areas. Do you want to affect the blues in your photo, but not the blue-greens? Need to smooth out the skin tones?

No problem. Simply choose the Skin Tone tab, select a color range, and adjust the uniformity sliders. The Express version just has the Basic tab. However, if you want to have complete control over your color , Capture One certainly wins hands down over Lightroom and everyone else in the same niche. If you shoot in a studio, odds are you know the value of shooting tethered.

Buy now. And the best thing is that you can watch it live and ask questions! Plus: you can upload your RAW files to see how I would edit them in one of the next episodes of the show. What is happening right now is a hidden revolution in photography.

Smartphones make better and better images due to new complicated built-in process algorithms. Give it years, and you will see the quality of photographs which only professional photographers would be able to compete with. Shortly, there will be no place for semi-pro image processing software — computer algorithms will deal with any basic editing much better. In years you will notice that your processing is far worse than your colleagues and iPhone XII makes almost the same images automatically right from the box.

In 5 years, there would be no place for you on the market. But right now you still have a chance to jump on this last train to the new RAW processing reality with Capture One Alexander Svet — professional photographer and specialist in image processing. Capture one pro 12 vs 11 free. Think Twice Before Buying Capture One Pro 11

These lenses are designed for vloggers, so Chris decided to film himself and find out how they perform. If I were to go to Medium Format, I think the added investment would have me doing custom lens and color profiles instead of trusting the C1 profiles as I do with my Sony equipment. Brand: Phase One.

To use Publishing Plug-ins you need to right click on an image, chose Publish and select Get Plugins. Of course, we all wish to see some other types of plugins: for retouching or HDR creation. Now they support any applications and you just need to select one to add it to the quick access list.

Here you will find all the classical Film Simulations:. But I hope Phase One will add support for other cameras in the future upgrades as well. That was a real headache for batch editing! There were some ways to turn it off, but all of them were not really convenient. In Capture One 12 you can set a custom preference for this. Capture One allows you to customize almost all the shortcuts and I highly recommend you to do so. In Capture One 12 developers have restructured the Keyboard Shortcut Manager and added a search bar for faster navigation in the hotkey list.

As well as with long hoped-for features, Capture One 12 brings long-awaited support for some new cameras:. It has all the basic functionality for RAW editing and is absolutely free. Just download it and start working. No activation is required. Capture One 12 is one of the user-friendliest upgrades of Capture One ever. Developers implemented lots of long-awaited features for loyal Capture One users and reworked some classical tools to make them more understandable for the new to Capture One photographers.

I think Phase One is heading the right way. Capture One needs to fight for a market share by attracting new users. At the same time, developers never forget about photographers who have remained with them for years. To edit straight-up saturation you need to go to another tab. Capture One Pro comes with an excellent Keystone adjustment. Pro only, not Express. If you shoot in a studio, odds are you know the value of shooting tethered. Most studio photographers who shoot tethered already use Capture One.

Now you can switch to greyscale view of the mask without image underneath: black is unmasked, white is masked and areas with different opacities are shown as shades of grey. The high-contrast mask makes it easier to see the masked areas, especially when you have applied Refine mask to the layer. Now you can draw annotations right from Capture One with this new tool:.

But what is more interesting — annotations can be processed as a layer in PSD file with the image. By the way, LAB numbers are also shown below the toolbar, which is an even more useful feature for me.

Previously, backup and especially restore mechanisms were not really intuitive in Capture One. In Capture One Pro 11, developers have updated them and now app will automatically help you with repair in case of crash or corruption of the catalog. You can also manually restore the catalog at any moment.

Or maybe I shall develop them myself? Or just lovely freeware scripts to make people around us a little bit happier. Capture One 11 Express For Sony — free! Learn more about Capture One for Sony. I transitioned to Capture One after Adobe went to the subscription model for the bulk of my work now. However, I find myself looking at other packages such as On1 Photo Raw. Your point is well taken.

Not to mention learning it, so it puts into question the reasoning for buying crippled software like C1. Thanks for taking the time to join in, Scott. Luminar is a lot of fun to use. I find it really gets my creativity going, whereas Lightroom seems a bit clinical sometimes. Different moods cause me to use one or the other at the moment.

I have strong agreements with you and other people arguing for DNG. If anyone had current sway over the market to make that happen, I think it would be Sony crossing over from hardware open standard into open software standards.

In hindsight, I should have gone from 7 to 9 to 11 because the even numbered updates seem to be not as significant as the odd numbered, recently. At least, in my opinion. Also, as long as you stay within the every other cycle, under current Phase One practices, you still get the upgrade discount.

If I were to go to Medium Format, I think the added investment would have me doing custom lens and color profiles instead of trusting the C1 profiles as I do with my Sony equipment. Being locked out of the software I once had is what is making me took around currently using LR6. Good points as well Martin. Not sure what the solution is really. Affinity Photo is a good Photoshop alternative though, and those guys are woking on a Lightroom clone which I think is an exciting prospect.

LR needs to be updated to work with new RAW formats every time there is a new camera. Unfortunately it is my understanding that the version you have will no longer be updated. Wow, interesting thread. I found this by accident and must come back here for other discussions. I get where you are coming from but you are overthinking this. If you believe capture one pro is the best software for you, I am not claiming you think this, merely stating if you do , than you should be using capture one pro.

You are saying this software is not for you because it does not support a camera that you currently do not even own? Thanks for your input. For someone generating a lot of images, swapping software necessitates major workflow changes and hundreds of hours of practice and refinement in the usage of the software. For example, if your work is using a medium format on a job, then processing all the images after the shoot and hading them off to the client, then pretty much never touching them again, Capture One might be ok because you can use it at that time.

My work often involves delving back into my archive of a million photos. So much hate and disinformation. First off lets not talk about subscriptions and cost. So this is practically a walk in the park. It a professional tool first and foremost, not a prosumer thing.

As far as support and direct competition, Hasselblad started that war many moons ago with Phase one. They made sure you could not use Phase backs on the H series bodies.

They opened the door to competition and a new war at a time when Minolta had a system ready to be shelved. Please do your homework guys, not all Phase sensors are made by Sony and Fuji does not have the same. The multi-layer system is pretty much exclusive to Phase. But I know many people who make a small living from photography, and these things are important to them. I started using Capture with a P back on a series Hasselblad a few years ago.

I just upgraded to a full IQ phase back.
